A note about Opera Mini

Posted by Greg Kumparak on August 4th, 2007 at 04:12 AM

Just a quick heads up, for those interested: Opera Mini can be a bit more bandwidth-hungry than the default browser. It loads the page you’d see if you pressed “View in HTML”, taking the Google Mobilizer step out of the process. Google Mobilizer rips a lot of stuff out of the page before forwarding it on to you, effectively shrinking it.

Helio’s TOS states that the “Monthly Limit” is 160 megs, but they have yet to penalize anyone for going over that. As long as you’re not doing anything along the lines of abuse (Tethering, Hosting a server from your Ocean, Streaming constant data), they don’t seem to mind. You could easily use just as much data in the default browser, by pressing “View in HTML”. Heck, I go over it every month with Google Maps and AIM! ^_^ (Not that I recommend going over it on purpose.)

As with any application that uses data, just keep an eye on your data usage. If you’re worried, please use the default browser instead.

thanks for the update, but the data usage doesn’t apply to all in plans right? oh and i had a quick question, the right soft kep in opera mini is set to ‘back’ but sometimes on input screens the default input language is set to korean, and the key to change it back to english is also the right soft key. so when i try to switch input languages it just takes me back to the previous page. is there any way to switch languages for input right now on the opera mini? and do you think you will be able to fix that in further opera mini updates? thanks! i love it!

yea, so anyway I LOVE OPERA MINI, but not my default browser isn’t loading pages correctly, actually it’s just never completely loading any pages now, and I can’t watch youtube on my ocean anymore…how can I hard reset without having to call helio??

Hmm, I wonder if they could penalize for going over. I mean, I am paying for unlimited data. The all-in plan specifies unlimited data. If the terms made an amendment, wouldn’t they have to change that phrase to “lots of data” or something similar? I personally would kill for tethering support. Unlimited data is unlimited data.

I cannot get the link for opera mini to load on my drift. Connection times out. Any suggestions?
