MGMaps

Hello everyone,
Cristian of MGMaps.com has setup a site so everyone can download a version of MGMaps that will install onto the Helio devices!

More info after the jump:

Disclaimer
Remember, this is an unofficial application for the Helio devices. Any problems you have with it cannot be dealt with through Helio, so don’t bug them! If it messes up your device in any way, it’s not our fault, Helio’s fault, or MGMaps fault (But, chances are it won’t).
Also, MGMaps does have a forum on their website, so if you are experiencing constant problems, check it out, there may be someone there with a similar one.

All you need to do is point your phones (Helio’s) browser over to http://wap.mgmaps.com/helio.html, then click View In HTML, and download!
If that’s not working, navigate to http://www.mgmaps.com/news.php on the Helio Browser, and click View In HTML, then select the link for the Helio version on that page.

Lightbrazer has written a nice little “do this first” list, so I thought I would include it with this post. (Reformatted it a little, sorry!)

Menu > Settings > Map Browsing - Make sure ‘Low Memory’ mode is on, hit Menu > Save > then restart the application.

Now go to Menu > Settings > Map Types > and make sure only the first Yahoo map is selected. If you have any other maps checked, it will try to load them all (slow)

Now, go to Menu > Settings > GPS and select the Internal GPS.

Next go to Menu > Settings > Display, and under the Display Settings category, uncheck everything. Go to the bottom under Tracking Overlays, and check them all.

Now restart the application and everything should be running fine! No crashes.

(You also may want to check out and see if the ‘Low Memory’ setting saved)

Also worth noting is that you may be getting errors when you try to route directions if you have Menu > GPS (NOT MENU > SETTINGS > GPS) >Mobile Tracking On. The reason is that in order to plot your path the map moves to each way point and then tags them. If in the middle of doing this the mobile tracking resets the map to your GPS location it screws everything up. so make sure you keep mobile tracking off until you’ve got everything plotted and you’re actually moving.

Neat! glad to see that new applications are springing up. Still waiting on that NES emulator (the iphone did it….)

  2. Louis Says:

is this better than google maps?

  3. JUSTiNB Says:

Not necessarily, it just has more customizable features, along with fairly instant GPS location updating.

  4. Lowell Says:

Can you write a tutorial how to download?

  5. bpm2000 Says:

if we dloaded the one on that meatbeer page is this the same thing or should we dload this one?

  6. JUSTiNB Says:

I didn’t know it was that difficult to download.. :P

-YOU MUST BE IN THE HELIO BROWSER
-YOU MUST GO TO THE LINK, AND HIT ‘VIEW IN HTML’, then download.

Sorry, didn’t mean to double post that comment. I meant to quote it.

Actually, It is that difficult. Doesn’t work.

  9. T-REX Says:

yeah everytime i hit View In HTML is just doesnt. I wanted to see if this is actually GPS and the dot actually moves as you do. Unlike Google Maps does right now.

  12. Jy1 Says:

Is this only for the Ocean? Can I use my Drift?

  13. Jay Says:

am i the only one that realizes that in all of these custom applications there is no way to get a zero…i was wondering because nobody mentioned this

  14. sisblub Says:

for some reason MGMaps wont read my GPS location, i’ve set the GPS to select helio device and internal, but it still wont read my location and i cant’ get the application to go to my location from the home screen whereas the googlemaps application on helio can. do i have the settings wrong or something?

  15. sisblub Says:

oops, never mind, i tried it again and it does register my GPS location :) but its slower than googlemaps included on the ocean, so i dont know if its any better

  16. Ray Says:

“am i the only one that realizes that in all of these custom applications there is no way to get a zero…i was wondering because nobody mentioned this”

I figured out how to get a zero! Press and hold the zero button and you’ll get it after a second or do. (At least it works in Opera Mini.) I still can’t get MGMaps to download on my Heat. I’ve given up. When I view either link listed above in HTML i just get the script code, not an actual download. Oh well. Looks like the Heat & Drift get stiffed again.

  17. Gabe Says:

I can’t seem to get it to download on my Drift either. Each time I hit the “view in html” link, it doesn’t seem to do it…I get the script code (like Ray noted). If there’s some missing crucial step, someone please post it.

  18. JUSTiNB Says:

In order to download on the Drift/Heat, you need to have the HTML file telling it to download on a HTTPS:// server, it’s the only way to break out of the Google mobilizer on those devices

  19. ditch13 Says:

when it got to downloading the content, it just kept giving me “download interrupted” and eventually failed… tried that many times….

  20. Ray Says:

Thanks Justin. However, I broke down and got an ocean last night… what took me so long??

  21. Josh Says:

I have a drift and still cant figure this out, I even tried putting https:// then the address that the link links to. that just made my drift restart, anybody figure this out yet?

  22. Jay Says:

So is there any point to downloading this for us Ocean owners who already have google maps?

  23. Jay Says:

you know what? on closer inspection, I see where this would be useful, you can get directions, then have a fast, automatic refresh of your position, direction, etc. to see where you’re going instead of having to go step by step as in google maps. I did see that you can also have your speed and position displayed as well.

  24. jacob Says:

can anyone with an ssl cert put up a mirror for us heat users?

  25. Dave Says:

I downloaded MGMaps on my Ocean and it works great! It’s a little slow downloading map tiles over the network, and the routing doesn’t seem to work, but otherwise it’s fine. If you really want to see how cool this is, go to mgmaps.com and use Strusik’s map creator to select an area you want to store in your phone, then save the map file and open it with gMapMaker. This will download all the Google map tiles for that area and for each zoom level you specify. Then just copy these to a directory in your phone, set “stored maps” and the path, and voila! you have a much faster way to pan and zoom your maps, even when you’re out-of-network. Try not to download too much though or Google will temporaily ban you. What a great app!
