New Stuff: Garmin Mobile, H.O.T update

Posted by Greg Kumparak on August 15th, 2007 at 06:27 AM

With the release of the Fin, Helio has brought some other goods to the table.

First on the list is the new Garmin Mobile application for the Ocean/Fin. Using Google Maps while driving isn’t exactly a bright idea - looking down at a screen = not looking at the road. The Garmin Mobile app is intended to keep you on the road instead of off a cliff, offering turn-by-turn voice navigation. You get to keep your eyes on the road and still know where to go. The cost is steeper than we would have guessed, coming in at 2.99 per day (Rental only). We’ll have a review sometime soon.

Features:
- Turn-by-turn navigation
- Voice directions
- Weather info
- Landscape/Portrait support (for Ocean)

The second is a new version of Helio On Top (H.O.T). Free, and available for all of the Samsung devices (Fin, Heat, Drift). No H.O.T love for the Ocean - looks like the RSS goodness will have to come from somewhere else for now.

Features:
- RSS Feed support. You can now add any RSS feed to H.O.T as a channel via the new H.O.T area of the Helio site.
- Channel Sharing (Recommendations)

While it’s a bummer that it isn’t Ocean compatible, the RSS support is awesome news. People have asked for it since the initial release of H.O.T, so it’s great to see it get implemented.

Is that price right? $2.99 per DAY? Or did you mean month? Please tell me you meant month.

Awesome news on the Garmin thing. :)

Maybe everyone else knew this, but I didn’t until a couple days ago, so–Google Reader can be accessed from a mobile phone here:
    http://www.google.com/reader/m

It works quite well on the Ocean, even letting you share and star individual articles from your RSS feeds. The pictures aren’t quite as clear as on my computer, but that’s the only complaint I have. If the Ocean did have built in RSS functionality, I’d probably still use Reader just so I wouldn’t have to keep track of what I’d read already.

Could have used this the other day when I was lost in Philly! Anyway, does anyone know if there will ever be an option to buy this or subscribe for the service rather than rent?

Just waiting on my ocean as of yet..still in the mail :(…as for the garmin thing…gotta say was at circuit city eyeing that lg tv capable phone and its sad but verizon while offering turn by turn at 2.99 / day also offers at 10/mo.

Wish we had the 10 /mo deal id just have to find a way to tack it on my 99 all in membership.

It is kinda neat being able to watch tv everywhere through verizon but when it comes down to tv vs. real web experience..i have to be honest..tv just can’t match up..thats what tivos are for..when ure home and relaxing..however info..real info as needed is a real need at any possible time any possible place.

thats my thoughts anyway..just thinking outloud hehe..still waiting on my ocean..need those java apps opening though !
    peace.
