Opera Mini 4 Beta and WLIRC with QWERTY Support
Posted by Greg Kumparak on September 11th, 2007 at 04:51 PM
A few weeks back, Heliocity brought Opera Mini to Helio devices, with a ton of help from gmonk63.
Well, he’s done it again – this time with QWERTY and Auto Landscape support. As an extra treat, he’s thrown in an IRC client, too! This was a lot of work for him, and we’re incredibly impressed that he pulled it off. Be sure to stop on by helio3g.com and donate to show your love!
To get either, go to the addresses below on your Ocean. Hit “View in Html” (Seriously – it won’t work if you don’t.) and click the link.
(Getting an error? Try one of the other links)
Disclaimer: Both programs are properties of their respective owners. As with all custom applications, mishaps during download/operation may require a hard reset of your device. Back up your schtuff! No modifications were made to the program’s functionality – only how it identifies itself to the device. All compiled code is still in its original form. Install at your own risk. If things don’t work, you may have to hard reset your device. This is in no way supported by Helio, Opera, or the WLIrc team. If you have trouble getting it to work, Tech support can’t do squat.
To download:
(Updated 1/09/07) Though we we’re quite proud of the fact that Heliocity was the first to offer custom downloads like Opera Mini, we’ve found that its better for all if the users of the community offer things themselves. Updates are recognized faster, bugs are squashed more quickly, and things tend to just go smoothly. Don’t worry – You can still get Opera Mini and a ton of other stuff. Check out the Homebrew section of our forums for links to a number of download sites.
Thanks gmonk, JustinB, and everyone else who made this possible.

Seriously cool. Helio should unlike Apple be happy you guys are willing to add to the Helio platform.

September 12th, 2007 at 6:56 am
Hey I’m getting page not found for all of the links!
September 12th, 2007 at 8:19 am
GMONK.. simply incredible. I donated – hopefully others will do the same, and entice you to keep up your amazing work. Thanks again.
September 12th, 2007 at 8:39 am
Hey, it installs and works on the Fin. I was a bit worried since the phone hung on the home screen after install (had to pop out the battery). But it works fine. However, I can’t enter special characters in text input boxes because the Opera right softkey overrides the input mode softkey on the Fin. Kinda sucks if you have an underscore in a username or something.
September 12th, 2007 at 8:56 am
This is great, The only thing i think id like to see is a ssh client. The phone has such great functionality now its unbelievable.
September 12th, 2007 at 9:47 am
woah! gmonk you totally rock! thanks so much, i had stopped using the first version of opera mini because i couldnt take advantage of the ocean qwerty but this is WAY sexier than helio’s default browser! maybe im just new to this but i like the zoom feature and the virtual mouse too
too too sexy. thanks!

Kick ass! I love it! Thanks so much!
September 12th, 2007 at 1:17 pm
Thanks for all the hard work.
Anyone else having trouble getting RSS feeds to work? I’m getting “Failed to load feed” with one RSS feed in particular: http://www.toolmonger.com/feed/ , which worked perfectly in the previous portrait view opera. Looks like I may have deleted the old version a little too quick.
September 12th, 2007 at 2:56 pm
Thank YOU!! I’ve donated as a token of my appreciation
Question; I was able to download the IRC and tried using it but would not connect, giving me an error message. Any words on how to make it work?
September 12th, 2007 at 8:26 pm
bad ass! its great super fast!
thanks a million!
September 12th, 2007 at 10:00 pm
Thank you so much, Gmonk! I’ve been so hopeful for a qwerty mini! I really appreciate all your hard work and time!

re: My earlier Q on RSS. From operawatcher:
“Rewrite of code —
Opera Mini developers rewrote the entire code for the new beta and added lots of improvements to the rendering layouts. However, since it’s all being rewritten, not all features of Opera Mini 3 have been added yet, for example the RSS feed reader, content folding, etc.”

Is anyone else seeing bad graphics? Also, links aren’t working for me, when I click on them, it’s just reloading the page…like when I am logged in to a site, when I try to use anything else on that site, it is logging me out and reloading the login page. Can anyone help with this?
September 13th, 2007 at 9:55 pm
Love the new beta, question…is there anyway to change the browse options to the old style(L,R=Page up, Page Down)?. The mouse is the only thing im having trouble getting used to.
September 15th, 2007 at 9:40 am
I dreamt about the qwerty support 2day n i rushed here as soon as i woke up…..
U MADE MY DAY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! this is just amazin’
September 15th, 2007 at 10:32 am
Untouchable
Change the settings to “fit to width” and the mouse goes away.
Jei
Have you gone to settings and selected “load higher quality pictures?”
Hope this helps,

September 16th, 2007 at 8:13 am
wow. i just have to say that this is amazing. i’ve been using it nonstop since i downloded it last night. amazing work. i have no idea how or what goes into programming but you’ve got it!!! thankyou!!!
September 16th, 2007 at 12:33 pm
wow
September 16th, 2007 at 8:00 pm
I just got my helio b/c of the recent availability of opera. I tried all the links and its not working! It keeps saying download failed! Am I doing something wrong?
September 16th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
For anyone still having trouble with downloads:
Sorry to hear that – we’re not quite sure what’s causing it. We will have a fix for this as soon as we figure out what’s causing it. The only solution for now is: Make sure you’re hitting “View in Html”, and if it still happens, try again later.
September 16th, 2007 at 9:15 pm
I tried all three links, the best I can get is download failed on the orig, the seconds come up as a 404 message. I can see them on a laptop, but with my Ocean it won’t install, is Helio blocking this somehow?
September 17th, 2007 at 10:19 am
If the last two links don’t work, it’s because they put two “LL” in html.
September 17th, 2007 at 6:32 pm
Links work, download starts, but then I get download interrupted or failed to install. I’ve tried heliocity.net/downloads and the original sites. I can download the file to my laptop, but my Ocean just won’t complete the install. I’ve removed the original 4 beta and even cleared my cache, history and bookmarks. I’m getting pissed and I can’t figure out why it won’t work. Yes I’m using html. I’m wondering if
I need to do a factory reset. What do you loose when you reset and do you need to call and re-activate the phone?
September 17th, 2007 at 8:28 pm
for anyone having probs with “download failed” just try the backup links. backup link 1 worked for me where the other two didnt.
Thanks, this rocks.
September 17th, 2007 at 10:55 pm
Did you click view in HTML like the instructions said before you tried to download MrGadget256
September 17th, 2007 at 11:44 pm
Okay so, if this is able to be coded to the Ocean and actually work like a charm as it does… then why don’t other programmers get the same idea, but create custom free games and apps? Imagine having a free Garmin-like application or a free application that has the potential to do something like Google Earth? Is it a possibility to have someone code a flashplayer so you can view EVERY video on YouTube, MetaCafe or other video sites? Is it even possible to code something to have streaming music on your phone?
THE POSSIBILITIES ARE ALMOST ENDLESS.
GMonk is an effing genius.
September 18th, 2007 at 4:30 am
omg this is AWESOME
September 18th, 2007 at 8:53 am
Yeah i have had the app since it came out and up until about 9 this morning no webpages would work? so i deleted it and went to the heliocity page here and it gets about 85% installed then fails? used all 3 links. never fully installs?
September 18th, 2007 at 1:19 pm
Not working for me either. Im going crazy here!!!
September 18th, 2007 at 8:45 pm
Finally got it to download after a soft reset and trying late at night, 12:37 AM. So if anyone else is having problems, wait for a less busy time. GMONK is the MAN!It rocks!
September 18th, 2007 at 11:26 pm
I keep getting this error when i try to install opera:
Failed to connect to the Internet.
513
java.io,IOException:null
I have tried soft resets, and yes the internet is working as i have been unable to finish installing it. It gets to about 85% to 90% and gives me that error.
September 19th, 2007 at 8:02 pm
I keep getting a error message when i try to download opera4 for the ocean it says ,Download interupted then it just fails to download I need help please.
September 19th, 2007 at 8:09 pm
it worked thanks you guys rock
September 20th, 2007 at 9:00 am
Wow!! This is so much faster and better than the Helio default browser. Cheers to GMONK! You’re amazing! I love my Ocean ten times more now!
September 20th, 2007 at 12:17 pm
i just wanted to thank gmonk again for making the beta2 opera mini work so well with the ocean
im almost seriously considering getting another battery to keep up woth all the internet usage im doing on the ocean now haha thanks again, ur a genius
September 24th, 2007 at 9:55 am
hey so what is the opera do?
September 25th, 2007 at 11:44 pm
If you want to use the Left Right Up Down number scroll thing in landscape just hold down alt and then hit the numbers corresponding to the direction you want to scroll. It is a little quirky but it works, except for hitting 5 to zoom. I find it over scrolls so to stop it from doing so just tap the number again and the scrolling should stop. hope this helps B-)
September 30th, 2007 at 2:43 am
For all the crappy things I said about beta version 3, I take it back. I just spent the better part of more than an hour playing around on the new version. It’s 95% there!!! … which means it’s HIGHLY usable. For those having download problems, I had the same problem as well. I was typing in the address directly. Don’t do that. Go to the heliocity webpage and browse around under downloads until you find the right links. From that point on I had no problem downloading the program. Typing directly gave me download errors (YES, I HAD THE RIGHT ADDRESS!) and timeout errors. Hope that helps anyone still having problems getting the download started.
September 30th, 2007 at 2:53 am
NExt version suggestions? Incorporate what Helio Ocean already has built in as apps… like the ability to view YOuTube videos (can’t do that from the Opera Mini browser). Change the program name to something with the word Opera in it (instead of Mini4Beta). For some reason, and maybe it’s my imagination, the scrolling action doesn’t seem to work as well as it did in beta 3 version.
Great things about the newer version: Resize options bring this to an almost full-screen browser. The ability to scroll left and right and STICK in that position is almost perfect! (That way I can set the margins on text reading and get in a WHOLE line of text in one scan — WOW!) “Hold and scroll” going up and down is nice and quick. I like the extra settings options – like the ability to download higher resolution images. I don’t recall the history being as easily accessible in the previous version – so this is nice. Getting the search engine going is a little easier than version 3, but still requires patience and sometimes persistence to get the right letters (THE ONES I TYPED IN) to stick in the browser and not some OTHER stuff I didn’t enter. Trying to enter a page where “I know better” results in a browser crash — like trying to access audio files — I know it’s coming some day.
Thanks a million!!!
September 30th, 2007 at 3:01 am
OH, I forgot to mention…. as others have mentioned, version 4 picked up a lot of speed over version 3. IT will be my default browser from now on until bigger and better things arrive — THAT’s a big kudos because version 3 definitely was nothing to make me stop using the helio default browser. (I’m still loving the full screen view getting to read a whole line of text at once!!!) Like others have said, this new beta version (4) is quick! Quick to load, quick to run. Quirky on a few pages, but I can deal with it for now.
And thanks a billion!

CoooooL ! Had to go through all three installs b4 I got it, but now its definatly sweet! GMONK…YOU IS DA MAN!!!
October 3rd, 2007 at 2:19 pm
hey I have tried all three links and followed the directions. It is saying page not found. Can anyone help?
October 3rd, 2007 at 3:44 pm
Same with the failing here, however the 3rd link worked like a charm on my ocean!
October 5th, 2007 at 1:44 am
omg!!!!! this is awesome Gmonk thanx A BUNCH !!!!
October 5th, 2007 at 9:24 am
None of the links work for me, I get the “failed to install” error as well. could helio be blocking the installation of this to prevent people from hogging bandwidth?
October 5th, 2007 at 9:36 am
Nevermind, it worked now. first link definately doesn’t work, first mirror does (if you read carefully, must view in HTML, or it really won’t work)
October 7th, 2007 at 11:11 am
I can’t get it to work either. And I doubt it’s user error.
I’ve tried all of the links, all viewing in HTML. I get “download interrupted” twice and then “download failed”
October 9th, 2007 at 5:00 am
All I have to say is… AWESOME!!! Great job guys. Thank you very very much!!!
October 10th, 2007 at 6:06 pm
Attention: Everyone having problems downloading
1. Open the internet on your Ocean
2. Go to the url http://www.heliocity.net
3. Choose “View in HTML”
4. navigate to the download link and THEN click it.
Do NOT type in the direct .html pages to the download link, you will get an error.
October 11th, 2007 at 11:29 am
The two alternate links are good, unfortunately they both come up with a “download interrupted” error message. I’ve tried navigating from the heliocity.net main page, emailing the links to my Yahoo! account, ensuring I’m viewing in HTML mode, etc. Same thing every time. It’s odd, especially considering that the files are available when I click through the links on my computer. And I just did a hard reset this morning b/c of the Helio browser white screens of death problems. Weird.

If I see one more download interrupted message I am going to kill someone…Everyone knows about the problem..Everyone…There is no fix to it on our ends..It is a helio related problem so quit posting it…..
October 28th, 2007 at 10:38 pm
Gmonk, i swear to God helio should give you a job. It works perfectly on my Ocean…. unfortunately, the IRC application doesnt work at all… i downloaded it, but every time i try to connect, it just loads for a minute and goes to an error page shortly before closing.
does anyone have any idea how to fix this problem?
and thanx a billion gmonk!
November 7th, 2007 at 1:59 pm
I noticed on my opera browser a new version is available. Would it be safe to upgrade it on the Ocean? I love it so much, it’s a freaking awesome browser and makes browsing on the ocean so enjoyable.
November 13th, 2007 at 10:02 am
OMG!!!thanks a ton!!!I really appreciatye this guys!!!
November 20th, 2007 at 11:16 pm
For some reason i tried all three links and nothing is happening.
The links work, but i hit “view HTML” then click on “mini4beta” & it says
“Preparing for download”
Then while it’s downloading the screen saying “Download interrupted. Resume?” appears.
I click OK but then it appears again, and at the third time it says “Download failed” and says
“Connect to Helio portal?”
Can it be helped? i really want to get the Opera Mini on my phone D:
November 30th, 2007 at 11:11 am
i cant get it to work. followed all directions. whats wrong with this download?
December 4th, 2007 at 8:38 pm
I get the exact same thing as Antz.
December 5th, 2007 at 9:51 am
Yes, more “Download interrupted. Resume?” messages during the “Contents” portion of the download/install.
If anyone who has access can try to download load this again and report, we’d all be quite grateful. Thanks!
December 5th, 2007 at 10:49 pm
Same Error: “download interrupted. Resume?” 2x
then ” download failed.”
I just recently got an ocean, and they said that they just had a software update, could that have caused the failure?
December 7th, 2007 at 9:07 am
I must be doing this wrong……….I am typing in the links straight from my default screen browser. How do I select “View in HTML”? I am not seeing this option. Someone please assist.
December 9th, 2007 at 8:13 am
I just got my Helio Ocean and started to search for customizations right after the first time using their browser. I have never used Opera ever before, but I really am interested to try this on my ocean. If only any of the links worked… I look forward to finding out more great things that people can make this phone do without having to pay a dime. Thank you.
December 10th, 2007 at 12:23 am
I, too, am getting the “download interrupted” message. The installer hits “Install Info” and then displays the title as “Mini4Beta”. Then it moves onto Contents and shows the interrupted message 2 times and then fails.
I tried saving the mini4beta.jad.dd file to a web server that I control and downloading it from there but it has the same behavior. It appears that there is something up with the archive or something up with my Ocean. It doesn’t look like this has worked since Nov. 13th. Can anyone verify if it has worked more recently than then?
My Ocean software info says D0810HEP03_2.160. Does anyone else have that version and can get this install working?
December 10th, 2007 at 10:38 am
For anyone monitoring this thread, the issue with the “download interrupted” was due to a proxy setting in the .dd file that needed to be changed. Here’s a link to where you can get the Opera 4 Mini Final:
http://www.heliocity.net/2007/opera-mini-4-final/
Here’s the note about the fix for the proxy issue:
http://www.heliocity.net/2007/3rd-party-downloads-to-return-shortly/
And here’s the solution to the problem (if you want to edit the .dd file yourself and make your own page for installation.)
http://forum.heliocity.net/index.php?topic=4201.0
Thanks, everyone, for helping with this. Opera make a night-and-day difference with browsing on the Ocean!
