Opera Mini for everybody! Custom apps! Yay!
Posted by Greg Kumparak on August 2nd, 2007 at 07:59 PMWe made you wait a whole two hours for it, and here it is: Custom applications are now possible on the Helio Ocean! The final kinks (We’re glaring at you, file headers.) have been worked out.
It took a lot of effort by a small group of Heliocity members (Huuuge shoutouts to gmonk63 and JustinB, this never could have happened without you guys. No, seriously – they did a ton of work.), but the hard part is over.
The first proof of concept is something that everybody’s been dyin’ for – Opera Mini. That’s right – pure, beautiful, google-proxy-free browsing. It’s not perfect yet – there are a number of bugs we’re workin’ out, but Opera makes a damn good browser.
Download info and more details after the jump
We’re working on an application to allow anyone to convert MIDP 1.0/2.0 apps for Ocean compatibility – It should only be a few days before that’s ready. We’ll have more info in the days to come.
However, Opera Mini is ready now.
To get it (Updated 3/16/08):
Largely due to the incredible community response to Opera Mini, Helio has decided to offer Opera Mini as a supported download for Ocean users. Find out how to get it here.
Non-Ocean users can still get Opera Mini 3 or 4 from https://www.peetre001.com
To get it (Updated 1/5/08):
We no longer host the app on Heliocity, as there are a few people willing to do it who have the time to keep an eye out for updates.
While this may change in the future, you can get your Opera Mini fix over at: https://www.peetre001.com/ (In addition to being Ocean compatible, this site is also Heat/Drift compatible if you remember the s in https://)
It’s not perfect yet.. It wasn’t written specifically for the Ocean, so there are currently some obvious downsides: No landscape, and no QWERTY. Booo! Don’t worry, we’re working on it! (This has since been added)
Be sure to check out the built in RSS Reader and the Photo Blogging tool.
Major thumbs up, once again, to those who did a ton to make this happen – JustinB and Gmonk63, you rock. Oh, and a big huge credit to Opera for making a ridiculously good app that, once the platform obstacles were overcome, pretty much just worked right out of the box.
More applications will begin trickling onto the Ocean soon. Get ready to use you Ocean for a whole lot more.

Impressive… I would be curious to know if you guys can fix the ‘bugs’ that crawl around in my ocean… I would love to have simple things in life… like page scroller w/ the side volume buttons… and to use groups for something useful like Group Ringtones… Because in the end its the simple things in life that make us happy! I know i know… you throw us a bone and we ask for a steak, but hey that’s what makes our country great!
August 2nd, 2007 at 8:59 pm

August 3rd, 2007 at 12:51 am
I usually never post on any forums online, but i have to say it. This is amazing, you guys are amazing, i have always used opera and was dissapointed when i couldnt but now i can thank you.

August 3rd, 2007 at 11:10 am
thank you so much!!
August 3rd, 2007 at 11:41 am
im thinking, if you teach some of us how to make custom apps…(like tutorials, video tutorials would be nice!!!) then maybe some of us can put free games or myspace IM as applications…
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:01 pm
WOHOOO!! Too bad it’s only in portrait mode. but other than that this is a BIG step forward. YOU ROCK HELIOCITY!!!
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:14 pm
holy crap. please PLEASE make an ssh application.
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:28 pm
Great job! Love to see qwerty working in landscapte mode.
Cheers.
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:31 pm
Thanks all for your comments. Thox will be releasing an application to automate the process of converting a J2ME app into WIPI compatible files soon.
Creating tutorials tailored to making apps for the Helio devices is a good idea, but, it would take a lot of difficult coding to create something such as MyspaceIM
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:44 pm
You guys are my f****** heroes.
August 3rd, 2007 at 1:48 pm
Wow this is just what the Dr Ordered. Great Job Folks !!!

What was the base version of opera mini you used for the install? in theory, using a version for a QWERTY-enabled device as the base install might grant the same function to the Helio. For example a Treo or MDA’s version. Could be worth a try. It might only work in landscape mode then, but I think we’d all be ok with that.
August 3rd, 2007 at 2:10 pm
I appreciate your work. Looking forward to more apps. This browser is much better than the included one. THANKS
August 3rd, 2007 at 2:15 pm
Gorky:
Thanks for the brainstorm!
We’ve tried a few packages, hoping that one might coincide. Unfortunately, while keypad stuff is fairly standard, platform developers tend to write their own functions for listening for keyboard input. As such, Treo/MDA stuff would have all the data for their own keyboards, but it wouldn’t be listening for Helios.
We’ll keep crackin away at it – We’ll check a few more packages just for safe measure, and continue digging around to find out just how other apps utilize the Keyboard.
August 3rd, 2007 at 5:13 pm
Hi,
Sweet, I’m glad HelioCity designed this software.
Thanks,
MAP2010Wireless
August 4th, 2007 at 12:02 am
you guys have done such a great job on this, congrats! Now that you guys have paved the way, it will seem that helio will have an awesome future, becuase of custom apps.
August 4th, 2007 at 10:55 am
So.. if there’s no QWERTY input, how do you GO anywhere or TYPE anything into the browser?
August 4th, 2007 at 12:42 pm
It’s amazing how much better this is than Helio’s standard browser on the Ocean. Pathetic for Helio, props for Heliocity. Thanks!
August 5th, 2007 at 8:32 pm
My helio recently quit displaying web pages properly, and helio customer care was letting me down big time. Thanks to that link, the opera browser now not only works, but works better than the original helio browser did! Opera Mini RSS reader is AWESOME. This is saving me the 800 bucks it was gonna cost me (helio cancellation included) to buy an iphone and move to cingular! Please keep up the good work. I wish cell manufacturers/carriers would just open their SDK’s from the get go. It’d save everyone a ton of time, and make their phones so much more valuable.
August 6th, 2007 at 7:24 am
1 small step for Heloicy, 1 giant leap for all Ocean-kind!
take a smoke break, then get back to work on that QWERTY support.
August 6th, 2007 at 8:04 am
argh, i keep getting a “download interrupted” error each time i try to grab Opera via that link.. so close!
August 7th, 2007 at 7:58 pm
props
August 7th, 2007 at 9:26 pm
Thank you so much for sharing it with all the Helio users!!
I’m not sure if this is because of Opera Mini but after I installed it on my Ocean, Helio Mail’s automatic alert. stopped working. It was definitely working before but after the installation, I realized I wasn’t getting any alert for Helio Mail. Finally, today I deleted Opera Mini (sorry…) , and now I’m receiving alerts again… Hhhmmm, I wonder if anyone had the same problem… Thanks
August 8th, 2007 at 7:56 pm
hey guys. first, GREAT JOB!! i know nothing about programming so i would assume that this would take a lot of work.
second, @ Lance, the benefit of the Opera Mini browser is that there’s no filters of any kind. when you use the Helio browser, it’s adapted with Google and displays pages based on Google criteria. that’s why there’s a blue box at the bottom stating that the page has been modified or changed into a mobile version. then if you click the “view as html” link, the page takes forever to load into something that STILL doesn’t look right. opera gives you an internet browser. period. this allows all kinds of avenues just like using FireFox over iExplore. i don’t think im explaining this well, but opera is WAY better that the helio browser.
guys. seriously…keep up the amazing work. i work for FYE and i have to sell these things. the more you guys make’em better, the more i can sell, the more people will have them, use them, get your stuff and spread the word and start the cycle over again. rock on!
August 9th, 2007 at 11:55 am
FYI… check also this tutorial for converting j2me applications for Helio: http://forum.mgmaps.com/viewtopic.php?t=955
August 14th, 2007 at 8:52 pm
When I point my phone to download it, it goes the to download ‘page’ and shows “install info, contents, installing” but it only gets the install info box and it says ‘Download interrupted. Resume?. I press ok for resume, and eventually it tells me that the download failed. Any Ideas?
Thanks,
Kyle
August 14th, 2007 at 8:53 pm
Sorry for two entrys… I also have the exact same problem if I try the download on the mgmaps site.
August 15th, 2007 at 12:03 pm
I have the same problem as Kyle. It starts the download then says “download interrupted..Resume?” It does that twice then says “Download Failed”
am I doing something wrong? I put it in HTML and clicked the link?
August 15th, 2007 at 10:23 pm
I was so jacked to hear about this, but alas it never seems to fall in place for me. I followed the instructions thru Heliocity and the message that comes up…
Custom applications are currently not workin’. We’ll check it out.
I’ll check back later but I hope I’m not missing out for good!
August 16th, 2007 at 7:40 am
with the “download interrupted… Resume?” issue, i hav the same problem, at the same time, i also couldn’t download the mgmaps, or anything from email. i think it’s an issue on Helio’s end. it’s been 3 days, but it works fine at night… =(
only if someone could figure how to install language pack into the Ocean, then we will no longer be restricted on only browsing latin based languages or korean! n_n
August 16th, 2007 at 5:05 pm
i can’t get the opera mini to work on my ocean. can someone help me
August 19th, 2007 at 4:43 am
[...] There are several reasons why you may consider surfing the web using Opera Mini on your Helio Ocean, so I’m not going to go in depth on that front. I’m just going to tell you that it’s possible and all you have to do is follow the set of instructions found over at Heliocity. [...]
August 21st, 2007 at 11:20 am
One word: AWESOME.
THANK YOU!
August 21st, 2007 at 7:53 pm

August 22nd, 2007 at 6:55 pm
good job guys! thanks for putting some real effort into our “Mobile devices”! keep it up!
August 24th, 2007 at 4:59 am
I have been playing around with Opera Mini on my Ocean now for days. All I can say is… it’s great to be home! Thanks so much guys. I am totally looking forward to being able to utilize wide screen/horizontal and my QWERTY, but believe me when I tell you, I am NOT complaining.
Thanks again!
Anybody got some good links for Ocean – WAP – JAVA – etc?

Be blessed and be a blessing,
Gregg
August 28th, 2007 at 11:07 am
I have downloaded the browser but I am not able to do anything with it. What are you guys doing to be able to actually browse? I can’t use my Qwerty so I do not know how to navigate anywhere
August 28th, 2007 at 1:41 pm
mmm Opera Mini… sounds good…
i just DLed it… looks good,
August 29th, 2007 at 5:51 am
Hey, this is interesting…Although I don’t use Opera ’cause it doesn’t do qwerty, ever sence I downloaded it my stock browser works much better. Am I imagining things? Ican load pages now that would freeze up on me before. Anyone else notice this?
August 30th, 2007 at 3:51 pm
When I followed the direction, it told me DOCUMENT NOT FOUND.
Any ideas?
September 2nd, 2007 at 5:05 pm
Works pretty good…Hoping things get worked out soon so the landscape and qwerty work..but I heard Opera does not support landscape mode
September 4th, 2007 at 3:18 pm
I kept on getting 404 http error… can someone help?
September 9th, 2007 at 12:53 am
Nice stuff. I’m a complete spastic when it comes to keying in stuff on the number pad, though. I GOT to have the qwerty board, even if the screen doesn’t flip sideways, at least if I could get the qwerty option. I’m having a bit of trouble getting the app to click up and down through the pages (no response) but have no problem at all getting it to flip back and forth through pages I’ve visited (nice!).
After trying for about 30 min, I haven’t been able to get the number-keypad to work properly on a few of the websites – probably their problem. I’ll attempt to download again. (Basically, any page that requires text entry isn’t working for me, but any preloaded pages the opera mini included seems to work fine.) I thought, HEY! It would be GREAT to be able to access Meetup.com … fat chance trying to get my PASSWORD keyed in correctly since I can’t see what I’m entering for text. Any chance to develop a “tool” to overcome that problem… like be able to clip small amounts of text to a clipboard (like a password) that I can’t see? Arrrgh, I guess I COULD log onto that website from a computer and temp change my password to something really easy and simple.
Since I’ve gotten my ocean, I spend 2-3 days every week seeing if there are any new apps out there, so ANYTHING useful is a great bonus! I was a bit PO’d that I couldn’t get Napster to work on it, but even though Helio AND Napster says it doesn’t work, someone in tech support at Helio sent me step by step instructions to get that to work, and that’s nice to have now, too.
I keep begging helio for a good pdf reader, ability to view COMMON attachments on email besides pictures, and maybe flash or mp3-internet or OGG streaming compatibility, but we can only wish, right.
Glad to see someone’s interested in moving the Ocean forward. For now, I am liking it, even with little glitches.
And of course being able to actually ACCESS those “flash only” and “media heavy content” websites would be nice. You’d think Helio would make THEIR OWN website accessible on mobile devices, huh? Reminds me of the “flash only” survey helio sent to my mobile device email address and asked me to complete…. ha ha ha! Improvement #1… make your survey accessible for mobile devices, especially if you are going to send it to my mobile address!!!

sweeeeeeeeeet thanks chuck for that link,it works just fine when i thought all hope was lost, lol
November 21st, 2007 at 11:58 pm
If you have problems installing… simply do this…
1) go to customize
2) go to settings
3) go to device
4) go to reset
5) go to default reset
6) enter “0000″
when the helio powers back on.. try the download and install again.
November 22nd, 2007 at 1:10 pm
chuck’s link gives me the download error now when the “contents” box turns yellow…..
November 24th, 2007 at 12:29 am
it isnt werkin for me. it says that the download is interupted 3 times and then says the download failed
November 29th, 2007 at 1:31 pm
The link at http://helio3g.com/uploads/dload/mini4beta.jad.html is giving Page Not Found both with the ocean browser (in both HTML and mobile modes) and with a regular web browser. Perhaps helio3g.com uploads are only temporary? Would someone mind re-uploading this awesome program to helio3g? Thanks!
December 1st, 2007 at 1:20 am
I’ve had my Ocean for a week. I am disappointed that I have been unsuccessful installing Opera. I am always getting “download interrupted” a couple times, then download failed. I’ve tried everything. I’ve reset the device and tried every link I can find. Yes, I’m viewing in HTML. Does anyone know of a solution for this? Thank you.
December 1st, 2007 at 10:54 am
it doesnt work for me
December 5th, 2007 at 9:40 am
Don’t follow Babyface’s reset instructions. It will delete your calendar, internally stored photos and other customizations.

I went to http://www.peetre001.com/opera4final.dd I just get the text of the page but no download or anything.
January 18th, 2008 at 8:26 am
After downloading from the Opera Mini 4 QWERTY link in my Apps it shows Opera Mini 4 in the menu, but when I start using it and going to a few pages I get “Opera Mini 4 (will replace any Opera Mini 3) is now available. > Upgrade (hyperlink)” at the top of the browser screen. Is this because of the hack we’re using that it thinks we’re using an earlier version of Opera Mini?
January 18th, 2008 at 8:31 am
Dominic view the page as HTML when you first go to www,peetre001.com and try to download it.
January 18th, 2008 at 8:49 am
Nevermind, I needed to download the QWERTY FINAL version. Got it!
