CTIA 08: Mobintech Personal Display Glasses

Yeah. I know. I look rad.

Danish design firm Mobintech is aiming to bring the “big screen” experience to the mobile world with their Personal Display Glasses. It’s not the first time we’ve seen something like this - we’ve been reading about similar products since 2005. In theory, you plug a pair of these glasses into your mobile device, and through the magic of micro screens and crazy lenses, you’d feel like you were watching in a “big screen” experience.

I don’t know if I just needed to disconnect my brain and enjoy the video, but I just couldn’t feel the “big screen” aspect. The product details promise an experience similar to watching a 30 inch screen from 6 1/2 feet, but it just felt like a cell phone screen was being held 2 inches from my face.

The goods:

  • No batteries - pulls power from the device
  • Video quality seemed to be limited more by the phone than the glasses themselves

The bads:

  • Try as I might, I just couldn’t see it as being any bigger than my device’s built in screen.
  • You’ll look like a cyborg while wearing them, but not in a cool “Whoa, I hope he doesn’t blast me with a laser” way.
  • The glasses completely obstruct your vision, which really limits their practicality as a mobile product. The ability to see is kind of crucial in just about every situation outside of your house.

I recall a report about this technology being suggested/implemented for airline use and of course the iPod section.
I will have a better time awaiting the mobile computer circa 2005 also. Not the concept but a link mirroring the 2005 link.

This technology is like the hidden 3-D images of yester-whatever. If you stare at the screens long enough without actually looking at them… perhaps the “big-screen” will appear?
