Garmin Mobile gets 3D treatment

Posted by Justin B. on November 6th, 2008 at 04:39 PM

While it’s unknown when the update rolled out, sometime recently Garmin unleashed a small revision, adding the highly anticipated 3D view to Garmin Mobile on Helio. 3D view is a great tool for the easily confused and directionally-challenged (like myself). It still gives you an aerial view of the map, but it’s slightly skewed so it’s a little more realistic than the 2D ones. If you are currently subscribing to the service and it hasn’t prompted you to update yet, try deleting and redownloading the application. If you currently don’t have a GPS and find yourself getting lost on dark scary streets a lot, Garmin Mobile definitely gets the job done at $2.99 per day for quickies, or $9.99 per month for the extremely lost souls.

Feelin’ lazy? Dial GARMIN (427646) from your Ocean, Fin or Mysto and hit OK to jump directly to the download page. Already got it? Go into Settings > Route View > 3D to switch over.

Update: After reading some of the comments of it not working, it appears only the Mysto (and I’m assuming the Fin) version of Garmin Mobile have this. The way the Helio store is setup separates the Ocean from other devices because of Ocean’s screen flip function. Hopefully we will see the update mosey on over to the Ocean shortly.

I don’t mean to ask a stupid question, but do a lot of people use this? I live and die by the pre-installed google maps/GPS mash-up, and I travel all the time (it got me through Northern Virginia and the Piedmont this past week just fine). I can’t imagine paying that much money for something I get free; wouldn’t these people buy a car GPS instead? I don’t drive but I’ve done a fair amount of successful backseat driving with the google maps GPS.

It’s a good alternative when you don’t have a dedicated GPS (I do, but if I ever forget it this is an excellent replacement).

Google Maps is great. Garmin is better because of turn-by-turn vocal directions. Personal preference I guess :)

  6. Justin B. Says:

Should be up. Just download the app from the Helio store and go into the settings and change from 2D to 3D

  7. DER3k_ Says:

dont got it. still version 4.0.22 even the store app is the same :/

  8. digitalFX Says:

Same here, I wonder if they are slowly pushing it out in different markets.

  9. Justin B. Says:

Odd, version 4.0.22 is the newest. Did you go into Settings > Route View > 3D

  10. digitalFX Says:

Yup, no only two 2D options for me.

  11. derek Says:

    only 2D for me too

I used GM for a couple months and eventually junked it in favor of getting a real dedicated GPS.

What’s the point of using the phone’s GPS to get to a friend’s place, when that application monopolizes the phone’s other features? I have to QUIT the damned application to call or text my friend to let her know I’m 5 minutes from her home.

I got a refurb garmin c550, which bt-connects to the Ocean as a speakerphone (works great over the car stereo), and an mp3 player that pauses when giving directions or placing/receiving calls.

Buy.com has it for $170. That’s less than a 2-year contract’s worth of annoying GPSing with the Ocean.

maybe for already subscribed people when u go to download, maybe they haven’t updated that page with the update since its different than the page that says subscribe or rent. i would try deleting your subscription and resubscribing but that might double charge you on your bill

  14. DER3k_ Says:

i tried deleting it 2x just reloads the same version :/

Thanks for posting these comments, I’ve looked into the issue, and I will try forwarding it to the appropriate people to see if they can fix it.

  16. digitalFX Says:

Hopefully they fix the “bug” that when you get a text while using it the backlight turns off. You can pass that along too…

heliocity.net is DEAD, you guys are posting twice every like 6 months wtf, andposting b.s “what do u want to know about the ocean 2″ wtf..

    OFFICIALLY DEAD!

  18. Justin B. Says:

@joe: We are not dead. Heliocity has become extremely slow due to the fact that no new devices have been released. Once the Ocean 2 is launched, the site will become extremely active again with a whole slew of new faces (even though many old faces will have moved on). Heliocity is officially NOT dead.

  19. svargas05 Says:

@Justin B: Agreed man, I switched to Sprint and I still get on this website….

I myself, hope that Helio steps up their A-Game and cant wait to see what the Ocean 2 will look like and what it’ll do….

Ima be here for another lot of time….. :)

  20. SSmith Says:

Heliocity.net isn’t dead, if it was you wouldn’t be on here posting to everyone that it was…like every other helio owner, the site has nothing to go on because Virgin Mobile apparently forgot that Helio still has customers, especially ones like us who are so involved and into what Helio was doing. They have to put somethin out about plans, upcoming devices, new features, SOMETHIN that will get us excited about their future and see that they really plan to compete with the other US carriers, or your post will be right, and there wont be many of us left…
