Oh heeeells yeah.

Back in July, Helio flipped the switch that enabled Push e-mail support for Helio Mail, Yahoo, Windows Live, and AOL.

Gmail has now received the same treatment, making Helio the first carrier to support Push Gmail. It’s available now on any device with Ultimate Inbox. If you already have Gmail configured on your device, all you have to do now is hit “Send/Receive”, and it’ll ask you if you want automatic notifications enabled. Blam - Push Gmail support.

Update: Not just Gmail! All POP inboxes have gotten the option to receive automatic notifications!

Update #2: IMAP, Too!

  3. bohumphries Says:

This is great news! I can’t use Gmail through my company’s firewall and it was a pain to have to check using the iGoogle portal but not be able to read. Also hated having to use the phone to check them all the time…automation makes my life a little better.

  4. Drect Says:

yea i like this. i just noticed it today

  5. Hapax_Legomina Says:

kachang! this spells the end of forwarding to my helio address!

  6. fetus Says:

I only waited a year for it!

  7. Yuro Says:

    I love Helio xD

  8. HelioSKT Says:

@fetus: Hah. And everyone who doesn’t have Helio continues to wait for it (well, except BlackBerry users who pay extra).

  9. MR. ADAM Says:

@ Helioskt….NOW QUIT HOLDING OUT AND SPILL SOME BEANS ON FUTURE DEVICES!

not to rain on anyones parade or anything, cuz thats not how I am, But its not really push email, it actually just goes into send/recive every hour or so. and just so you know Sidekicks have had REAL push gmail since the sidekick 2 (my first phone) So while this is kinda cool, it could have been better by offering real push gmail coverage.

  11. Dave Says:

    @RAD:
If you’re right then everyone here is very mistaken. Push support and a phone auto-checking for mail every so often is a HUGE difference.
The iPhone checks all my mail every 15 minutes, doesn’t make it Push though. Kinda funny if this is true, since everyones thinking its true push.

  12. krafty Says:

this is great and all, but there’s still no way to archive the mail that you get on your helio, other than set up via imap, and instead of actual “deletion” it gets sent to the label “deleted items”

  13. HelioSKT Says:

@RAD: You’re completely, utterly and totally wrong. It’s push. It’s not pull, scheduled at intervals or otherwise. It’s real-time push to your device. And Sidekicks have never pushed Gmail. You might not be trying to rain on anyone’s parade, but you certainly are wrong. Thanks for playing!

    1. Helio is not the first carrier to support this. Whoever first started carrying Blackberrys was.
    2. It doesn’t cost extra to have this on a Blackberry.
    3. It’s still very cool and an awesome feature to have nonetheless.

  15. HelioSKT Says:

@rogue6: You’re mistaken about a couple of things.
    1. Helio is the first service provider to offer push email services on all types of accounts without additional fees.
    2. It does cost extra to have this on a BlackBerry, because those devices *require* a BlackBerry-specific data plan (BlackBerry Personal on at&t, for example, or BlackBerry Minutes & Mail on T-Mobile, for example). Remember, all service providers pay service fees to RIM for each subscriber that uses the BlackBerry infrastructure. Those fees are passed on from the service provider to the subscriber via the BlackBerry service plans.
    3. Thanks :)

helioSKT is two for two… anyone else wanna take a shot?

  17. RAD Says:

well then its broken onmy ocean cuz i sent myself some text emails and i got one an hour after i sent it and then the other a little after that. And on my sidekick it was deffinetly push gmail or else im crazy (which im not)

i added gmail as a pop3 email and it was push that way, im not sure if that alters it or not but still it was gmail and it was push

  18. RAD Says:

btw i dont mean to come off wrong cuz im actually really excited about this cuz im one of those ocean owners who hits send/recive every 15 seconds in search for emails, so this is pretty cool…i just wish it worked a little quicker

  19. Dave Says:

    @RAD:
Considering the Ultimate Inbox is VERY glitchy and many people have had many problems with their Yahoo! Push e-mail, I wouldnt doubt this to be much different. The whole time I had my Ocean and that Yahoo! was push I always had problems getting my mail pushed to my Ocean. I always had to either check for messages or just sit and wait for them (sometimes receiving them days later).

  20. PresPD Says:

I for one love this. I was tired of checking my email so often. Now I will be bothered by the spam that still filters into each of my emails from time to time without having to ask it to give me spam.

Still though, it’s the little features that are slowly creeping in for free that really made me and keep me as a fanboy for Helio wherever I go.

  21. Jerry Says:

I’m heavy user to use Yahoo Push e-mail and overally i don’t see critical problem to use it with my Ocean….but sometimes the push doesn’t work and it turns out I’m signed out. don’t know why…after resign on, it works fine…

  22. Lovecraft Says:

I’ve got Gmail IMAP on my Ocean and yesterday I set it as the default mail program. Almost immediately emails began to get pushed to it. Just a few moments ago I watched an email arrive via browser and heard my Ocean go “ding!” in the other room. Sure enough, that email arrived real-time. I’m going to experiment a little more to see if it happens automatically.

  23. Lovecraft Says:

Confirmed. Either it’s checking every 15 minutes or it is true push. Either way, I’m in love.

  24. jeadly Says:

Yeah, awesome. I was begging for IMAP and thought it would be push. Now it is and I’m a happy helioer.

It takes around 2 minutes for my ocean to get the test emails I’ve sent. Way faster than me checking manually.

  25. Josh Says:

I was really excited when, last night, my phone asked me if I wanted it to alert me about new e-mails. I was like what is this? Today I woke up to being told I had new e-mail. Cool!

  26. yertle Says:

Man, this just isn’t working for me. I got one alert on my phone. I’ve tried a dozen push test emails and haven’t gotten anything. Is anyone else having the same problem?

  27. DJayC Says:

I’ve identified a bug with this new feature:
    http://forum.heliocity.net/index.php?topic=7379.0

Anyone else seeing the same problem?

  28. MR. ADAM Says:

    @yertle

    YES

  29. crispy Says:

It’s not working very well for me either. When I first turned it on this afternoon, I received an email alert shortly after. But I haven’t received any more since, and I’ve sent several test emails to my Gmail account.

  30. yertle Says:

Maybe they’re just overloaded and too bogged down to get the push messages out… regardless, I’ve received ONE push notify for at least 20 gmail emails. I thought the gmail notifier might be squashing them but it’s still not working after I quit it on my PC.

  31. rogue6 Says:

@HelioSKT: You’re splitting hairs. Yes, Helio is the first “provider” to offer this, but they aren’t the first organization to do so. No one buys a Blackberry to use solely as a phone (although, yes you can, just like you can also buy an Ocean without an All-In plan). If someone did do either of those things for whatever reason, they would still have access to the same kinds of data, just at a different rate. So tell me where the “extra” comes in. All-In or A La Carte, if you check the auto-update box, you still get the emails, only you pay differently. If you use it enough obviously it’s just cheaper to buy the data plan for unlimited use. The same is true with a Blackberry. And I can’t speak for AT&T, but T-Mobile does not require a data plan for using a Blackberry.

  32. yuhltide Says:

    Crispy, Yertle,

Earlier my gmail did not seem to be getting pushed but now it is working great.

Did yours start working or am I just the lucky one?

    Helio,

Thanks for however you did this. I am looking forward to more happy surprises ;)

  33. Roma Says:

Gmail is my more important email, but I use yahoo and myhelio for other things… I’m just glad gmail finally works with the popup feature… all my other homies have to constantly check theirs or it only updates every 15 minutes or so…

sidenote: I like how Helio’s all-in plan is easy to understand and includes everything they have to offer… a big reason y I have Helio…

  34. GargantulaKon Says:

It is weird that even though I have it set up to sound and vibrate when I get a new mail alert, it does not happen when I do actually get a new mail alert. The screen lights up but that is it.

  35. Antagonist Says:

This is all well and good except MY BATTERY DIES IN ONE DAY thanks to the constant sending and receiving. It’s driving me nuts that the Ocean uses up so much power and dies so quickly. Sigh. I regret buying it.

  36. KRMcK Says:

wait wait wait. For the first few days my Ocean would only light up when I got a new gmail, which was great. But now it vibrates every time I get a gmail which is the most annoying thing in the world. I can’t figure out for the life of me how to turn off the vibrate, but keep it lighting up. Any help? Also, why would it only start vibrating a few days after the service already started working?
