Helio begins offering Opera Mini
Posted by Greg Kumparak on March 14th, 2008 at 03:53 PM
Back in August of ‘07, we managed to get unsupported J2ME applications to run on Helio devices. From day one, Opera Mini has shown to be the most popular application by far; across the download sites that offer it, it has been downloaded tens of thousands of times.
We weren’t too sure how Helio would react to the community offering Opera Mini. Would they react negatively, and try to block the download somehow?
Turns out, quite the opposite. Rather than trying to resist the community’s desire for Opera Mini, they’ve embraced it. As a direct result of its popularity as a homebrew download, Opera Mini has made the jump to being downloadable directly from Helio.
If we’re not mistaken, this makes Helio the first carrier to officially support Opera Mini as an alternative to their own browser. They haven’t made an official announcement, so we’re not sure how they’re positioning the download. However, it’s available now via jump code.
How to get it:
- From the idle screen, type the jumpcode “67372” (OPERA).
- Hit the flamekey
- Download, and enjoy!
The version offered by Helio is a bit newer than what is otherwise available, and a few minor changes have been made for this build.
This is something everyone involved should be proud of. Our collective goal as a community is to make the experience better for as many Helions as we can – looks like we’ve done just that. This is an awesome act on Helio’s part, and a step in the right direction. High fives and fruit snacks for everyone!
Update (3/19/07): Official word in the form of a press release just made its way down the wire.
Key points from the release:
- Helio is the first U.S carrier to sign a deal with Opera
- Newly released version is tailored specifically for Ocean.
“We’re always looking to give our members their choice of great applications so we’re excited to be the first service provider in the U.S. to make Opera Mini an on-deck option,” said Doug Britt, Vice President of Service Management at Helio. “Opera Mini is a tremendous mobile browser. Optimized for Ocean and running on a nationwide 3G network, its a combination that’s tough to match.”
“Offering Opera Mini underscores Helio’s insight into how the mobile industry is evolving,” said Rod Hamlin, SVP Sales and Marketing Americas, Opera. “Helio understands their customers’ desire for innovative and engaging mobile experiences and answering this demand with a choice in browsers explains why Helio selected Opera Mini.”

What no Mysto? I clicked download and I get “Sorry, your device does not support this item. No changes have been applied to this transaction”
Huh?

That is *SO* freakin’ sweet! Thanks for the info!
March 14th, 2008 at 6:01 pm
They probably are trying to figure out what they need to do to make it compatible with the mysto. The converted version of opera mini 4 final from peetre’s site does not work on the mysto either.

Hey…thats cool and all, but does anybody notice that Opera always adds an “e” to your entries when logging into a website, like Bank of america for example……..sometimes when trying to log in, it’ll add that “e” and to ur passwords as well…
leaving you lost and wondering y u got ur password wrong…….
March 14th, 2008 at 10:28 pm
That was a whole lot of excitement for nothing. I had a functional version of Opera Mini installed and deleted it just prior to trying to download the “newest” version listed here. Mysto. Didn’t work. Damnit.

If anyone can help me please email at RichieTM01@yahoo.com

Wonderful – now if only they allowed you to modify the firmware so that Opera becomes the official browser triggered from email links, etc…the Helio browser is pure crap – they need to embrace that browsers are not their core competency and offer us Opera Mini as the default.

This is very commendable! Awesome work, but it seems some bugs need to be worked out from reading the comments above.

Did not work on my fin, said not compatible, once my ocean charges up again I will try it on there too hope it works lol

It’s pretty much the same as the old version.

[...] To get it (Updated 3/16/08): Largely due to the incredible community response to Opera Mini, Helio has decided to offer Opera Mini as a supported download for Ocean users. Find out how to get it here. [...]

I was on the phone with CS the other day, trying to get the inept web browser breathing again. Pretty uneventful call, until the guy suggested I try to download Opera Mini to use. I did a double take. Unfortunately, at the time, it wouldn’t have helped because YOU NEED THE S****Y BROWSER TO GET THE GOOD ONE! And I ended up having to factory reset to fix the problem
Great step in the right direction though. Maybe, eventually, they’ll get the picture and toss that glitchy, crashy crap!

Did anyone else notice that if you go to google with this you get routed to Google Poland?
March 19th, 2008 at 10:40 pm
I love it. I had been using the “unofficial” one with no problem. This new one seems to work faster and smoother.
@ Ninja, I am getting the same as you.
March 20th, 2008 at 9:18 am
So for the people who already had the unofficial release on their Oceans, is this new version actually any different? Based on therealmrbob’s comment, it seems like it isn’t.
Oh, and has anyone encountered problems downloading the official release with the unofficial release installed?
March 20th, 2008 at 6:58 pm
anyone know how to get the old opera version (3) on the mysto? Version 4 doesnt work
March 21st, 2008 at 7:08 am
I seem to be having problems downloading the new opera as well. I do have the homebrew opera installed.
Actually, im can’t seem to see anything with the default helio browser. I didn’t notice until now since I only use opera.
