Oregon Trail Preview

The head of games at Helio, Leo Jun, was kind enough to send us a preview copy of the new Oregon Trail game from Gameloft. Yeah, yeah, I know. Lots of game talk recently, however, there is some cool new stuff upon the horizon.
Most people remember the Oregon Trail from the old Apple II (If you don’t, check out the Wiki article on it). It was probably the best game in the late 80s on that system. If you’ve never played, it revolves around a family traveling along the trail to Oregon back in the 1800s, and you have to hunt for food, avoid diseases, snake bites, drowning while crossing rivers, and essentially getting to Oregon.
Gameloft’s refreshed version definitely does not disappoint. They did an excellent job of reviving the Oregon Trail series, which I was kinda worried about (Since sequels, especially mobile ones aren’t usually great). They kept the core gameplay pretty much the same and added new mini-games, side-quests, and graphics without ruining the classic style of it. I also found some parts of this game hilarious, such as the bear attack animations, the snake bites, and other things I don’t think I should spoil. Everything you would expect and more is there from the original game, such as hunting, and navigating the river when you miraculously make your wagon float and oxen swim. Some new things such as fixing the wagon by whacking nails, and fishing add to the gameplay in a positive way.
This is definitely a hot game so I’ll make a post once it hits the Helio store. It’s just got a few tiny bugs in it, so it shouldn’t be too much longer before it’s released. Stay tuned!

I suppose the question with every Helio game is, landscape support?

No, unfortunately it is not a landscape game. I’ve been told that there are some in the works, however no names were given due to the tentative schedule.

this is getting kind of effin ridiculous. almost the whole summer has gone by with no news of the new ocean 2. I’m *this* close to ending contract and getting the inferior Sidekick 2008 just cuz I’m bored with my ocean… and my parents will pay my T-Mobile bill as apposed to me paying 85+ dollars a month for Helio. *this* close.

Yes! I’ve been waiting for this to come to Helio since I heard they were making a mobile version of the game.
This game was the best way back in 2nd grade. lol
It’ll be nice if for nothing but nostalgia. =D

lol rad,the myth of the sk being inferior is just that,A MYTH…i canceled my helio account and copped a lx(w/ the video OTA)and use it/love it WAY more than i ever did the ocean…the stock html browser is great,EDGE isnt much slower than 3g and if you buy the right apps,its actually better than the ocean(LOVE the rss feed/h.o.t ish app,news room,which the ocean lacked)!better qwerty too…theres no oz2 news,cuz there will be no oz2,lmfa0o0o0…everybody on this site are just brainwashed helio kool aid drinkers *shrugs*

Genocide wasn’t in the original, although I think getting attacked by Native Americans was one of the random negative events. Not entirely sure, since family members “dying from dysentery” is one of the most memorable afflictions… I’ve even seen it on a shirt.

I love the game. Being from Independence, Missouri, we don’t have much to brag about besides Harry S Truman, the guy who created the Beverly Hillbillies, being the “New Jerusalem” for the Mormons, and obviously Oregon Trail. And meth in the late 90’s.
It’s too bad people are disappointed when the come to see our town and find a pay-per-hour parking lot and apartments where you would have bought wagon wheels and some oxen.
