“OZ2″ hits FCC
Posted by Greg Kumparak on March 28th, 2008 at 08:26 PM
Oh, the FCC - how vast is your collection of goodies, and how large your mouth is.
Every time anyone develops a new device, they’re required to place an FCC conformity label somewhere visible to the end user. Pictures of the label’s placement are put up on the publicly accessible FCC site. There are some confidentiality practices in place to help protect the secrecy for the related companies, but (as just about every manufacturer has found out) they don’t tend to work for crap.
Today, an entry for “OZ2″ hit the FCC site. As you may recall, the Ocean went by “Oz” prior to release. It doesn’t take much deduction to connect the lines from there. Is this the much theorized “Ocean 2″?
What the FCC report shows:
- The above picture, which appears to be the rear of the device
- Camera
- Made by Pantech
- Bluetooth
- MicroSD below battery
If the speculation was rampant before, I can’t imagine how hard the rumor mill will be churning after this.

No way thats a ocean 2.

hmm… i like the camera lens being centered on my Oz. hopefully it wont be too weird having to keep your finger out of the way of the lens when taking pictures in landscape. im glad my upgrade is coming up in a few months. let’s just hope this thing comes out before christmas.

voice activated dialing would make this phone perfect!!!!!!

Ugh, can’t Helio fix the Ocean first? Or do something like…I dunno, make it so that their Calendar can sync with anything? Maybe if they stuck to what they said about updating the Ocean back when it first came out I’d be more apt to get excited about Ocean 2. Instead I’m frustrated at the lack of backend development going into the Ocean. Like hell I’m going to get one of these, I’m going to switch carriers if they actually go through with this.
Or at the least, put out a firmware update for Ocean that allows it access to whatever functions Ocean 2 has, ala Zune did.
Thumbs down.

I cant wait for more details! I hope Helio’s on the ball with this one….

We find out in 30 some odd days.

I agree with Ardoreal about the Ocean. They should fix the ocean before coming out with a ocean 2.
March 29th, 2008 at 6:13 pm
I think by releasing a Ocean 2, that it would come with all the “fixing” you guys above have mentioned. But i truly hope its a touch screen phone. I mean how can u compete wit the iphone if the Ocean 2 isnt gonna be a touch screen one….
March 29th, 2008 at 6:57 pm
This is indeed called the OZ2, will be having background music, and some more mods…., right now they are in the testing process. Hit me up on my myspace if ya are really interested in some more info…. myspace.com/allan_gonzalez

They should at least offer a trade in for the Ocean 2 if they don’t fix the Ocean. I love my ocean, but agreed it’s a lil buggy at times.

WILL THIS BE TOUCHSCREEN AND ALSO WEN WILL THIS BE OUT ANY GUESSES IM TIRED OF MY OCEAN IT HAS ALOT OF THINGS BUT IDK ITS JUST BORING WITH THE HELIO FORMAT
March 30th, 2008 at 9:59 am
Why Pantech? The Ocean has its own share of problems (AWFUL and inconsistent battery life, mine just lasted 24 hours and I’m AMAZED… very slow to respond when typing, crashes, etc) that none of the Samsung phones have. On top of that, you can access more in the Samsung phones. I’m definitely going to wait to see the complaints on it before switching up, I don’t want to feel like I spent money on something that could really be great, but falls short due to stupid things.

The Ocean 2 will have touchscreen and wifi
March 30th, 2008 at 2:39 pm
Boom that sold me, Wifi… that way i can be out of the country or out of 3g and still connect to wireless networks… woot!
March 30th, 2008 at 7:07 pm
OH DATS COOL SO IF IT HAS TOUCHSCREEN IT MUST HAVE A BIG SCREEN BECAUSE IF ITS THE SAME SIZE THERES NO POINT FOR TOUCHSCREEN AND IT BETTA HAVE 3G AND WIFI WHEN DO U GUYS THINK IT WILL BE OUT AND DOES IT HAVE FLASH I SEE NO FLASH LIGHT ON BACK?
March 30th, 2008 at 8:12 pm
I hate to be the one to rain on the wifi parade…. But the test report mentions both the bluetooth and and CDMA transmitters but says nothing about wifi. Sorry kids.. wifi would be cool though. Get your hopes up now for the Ocean 3!
March 31st, 2008 at 6:33 am
it would b cool if helio brings it to CTIA this year in vegas
March 31st, 2008 at 3:30 pm
I agree with much of what’s said above. A touchscreen would make the phone sleeker, although I personally prefer the slider keypad for typing. As for fixing things, yes I think Helio should release firmware upgrades for the Ocean rather than shafting their current Ocean users by coming out with an Ocean 2. Do they honestly think I’m going to buy a new Ocean every two years if they don’t ever do upgrades on my current Ocean? I’m also surprised that Helio hasn’t contacted more of it’s Ocean customers to find out what they do and don’t like about the phone. I have a long list of simple things that could be improved, for example, not having the stupid thing ask me if I want to unlock the keys after I’ve locked the keys and then bump it in my pocket (who designed that hidiot idea into it?). I’ve even told the customer service people about my ideas and they don’t give a rat’s, and I work for a company that designs cell phone technology. I like my Ocean, but this Ocean 2? Well at least it looks like they’ve fixed the totally crappy camera on the Ocean. WIFI sounds good too. It would also be good to do bluetooth file transfer rather than just connect to headsets. I hope they get rid of that stupid proprietary charger/USB socket and just use a plain old mini-USB socket for charging and data transfer. Background music, who needs that garbage? A decent GPS app with standalone capability would be better. Finally, with this Ocean 2, can you please get with the times and move that memory card slot to somewhere other than the stupidest place imaginable, under the battery (you hidiots!!).
March 31st, 2008 at 10:54 pm
i’m surprised that I’m first to say this, but i think the circle you guys are calling a camera, may actually be a speaker maybe?
it looks as if the camera may be there towards the bottom of the pic, on that end of the phone, and the button-latch for opening the battery is there to the right of the image.
the side buttons look like alot of fun, and very convenient.
i’m sure pantech will try improving the device to keep it from freezing, but i doubt they will succeed.
and you guys with the rumors, state your sources. nobodys going to believe you.
wifi.
music for the background.
do sound nice though.

ok. i agree that the original Ocean deserves some vast improvement…but i also have to say that Helio seems to solve it’s problems with new devices. take, for instance, the drift-heat-mysto. first you get a phone that works great but with some flaws, and high price point. then verizon gets the ever-stupid “chocolate” and presto, out pops the heat (in a fabulous gold i might add). after that we get the mysto, larger in size, but better (haptic) touch buttons, bigger screen, better cam…basically the drift+heat. so what about the ocean. well, i don’t know about you but if you remember the Hero, we saw a lot of precursors to the Ocean. pantech made, bulky but stylish, single slide with room for more. clearly Helio figures that the money it would take to update the old can be revamped in the new. the Ocean 2 (which i’m sure will be eclipsed with a way better name) will have the horrible battery experience of the fin, the dual slide/qwerty-board of the ocean and the firmware fixes and improvements of the mysto. i only hope the price tag isn’t ridiculous. the good news, all those people that bought the ocean when it first hit shelves should be just at their two year mark in contract meaning that they might get an amazing deal to renew and get the kick ass new device to put Sprint, Verizon and shi-T-mobile back up on the shelf and leave Helio in the consumers’ hands!!!
go helio!

The OZ2 is set to drop in the summer this year…..hopefully it gets all those updates we are hoping for!!

Talked to a Helio Representative that was in town to open help open up a Kiosk in my local Mall. He says that the Helio 2 is still a dual slider, and that it is thinner. he would say nothing on whether it is a touch screen or not.
My guess is that it is not a touch screen. I believe they are focusing on fixing the software issues with the original ocean as part of this release, not starting from the ground up with a new interface.
Even if they made a touch screen phone i doubt they would release it under the ‘Ocean’ line, and like all the other iPhone clones hitting the market now it probably wouldn’t be capable of multi-touch so it’s not even worth it
April 17th, 2008 at 5:22 pm
Oh and The only thing they are currently saying about release is 4th quarter this year.
April 27th, 2008 at 9:05 pm
SuTheo, ummm i wouldnt really believe someone that works at a kiosk in a mall. they are peon’s.
May 11th, 2008 at 11:46 pm
Helio Kiosk Reps are not “peon’s”. We just work at a Kiosk. We’re still DIRECT Helio 411 and are at a convienience inside your local mall. to think we’re “peons” just because we have a kiosk is an oversight.
May 12th, 2008 at 2:45 pm
seriously the biggest problem with the problems with the ocean are the simple it is to heavy i mean it is like having a brick in your pocket and then the big things are the freezing up and the picture quaility is a nightmare i spend alot of time on youtube like everyone else and the iphone loads faster and gives alot alot alot better picture these r not things that should be hard to fix
May 20th, 2008 at 10:28 am
But think about it… how fast would the battery go with all these set features like wi-fi and touch screen?… you better have some extra cash to shell out for two additional batteries
