Ocean 2 now on sale
Posted by Justin B. on February 12th, 2009 at 07:24 AM
The elusive Ocean 2 is finally available via the Helio website, along with it’s spiffy 360° view for your 360° obsessive viewing pleasure (Yeah, we know you sit there and drag the bar back and forth for hours). Pricing is as expected, $149 for new members/contracts, $400 MSRP.
As well as the Ocean 2 going on sale, today Helio members also benefit from the new nights and weekends time starting at 7PM and free mobile-to-mobile (between Helio members), which is pretty darn dandy.

I have been on hold for 30 minutes now waiting to upgrades to the Ocean 2. there must be a lot of people calling all at once to get this
February 12th, 2009 at 8:19 am
it took me 45min to get done but im getting the ocean 2 for FREE!!! i was due for an upgrade and using the credit got me my cherry red ocean. mmm…overnighting it to get it tomorrow!! oh ocean, i loved thee, but your younger brother is hotter!
February 12th, 2009 at 8:39 am
How did you get one for free? I have had my Ocean for a year and a few months now, I thought that would be enough to get a better upgrade deal…
February 12th, 2009 at 8:46 am
Free mobile to mobile? Is that to any cell phone provider? Or just helio phones?
February 12th, 2009 at 8:51 am
Im alittle disappointed that the MSRP is so high, I was gonna get one without extending my contract, but the ocean 2 isnt worth $400.
February 12th, 2009 at 9:43 am
Too little, too late in my opinion. With so many prepaid companies offering unlimited EVERYTHING for as low as $50 a month why would you want to be on a contract where your $65 a month is more like $85 a month after taxes? My brother has boost unlimited and hasn’t had a call drop yet. For $50 a month (flat) he has unlimited talk, text, AND walkie talkie. The only difference between Boost and contracted cells is that the internet is a little slower, but honestly using internet on most phones sucks anyway. When Helio first launched I was one of the first to get the Ocean, but over these two years I have had nothing but headaches. And most of the headaches were caused by customer service reps in India and the Phillipines who do nothing more than follow a script and could care less because at the end of the day you are on a contract and they know you don’t want to pay the $175 termination fee. Be careful my friends..you are signing up for a two year contract when more and more companies are offering unlimited everything w/ NO contract at a better price. We are in a recession!

I really tried waiting, haha. I really wanted to play with the Ocean 2. But I jumped ship too early for the G1. Oh well. Maybe someone around my city will have it and I can toy with it for a little.
February 12th, 2009 at 11:26 am
Don’t forget Microsoft Exchange is also free now too.
February 12th, 2009 at 12:27 pm
@Epi1 i have been out of contract since sept. i told them i wanted an upgrade and they used the upgrade credit of $150 to cover the cost of the ocean 2! i paid them NOTHING except $15 to overnight me new best friend. im psyched. i dont need the pre or the iBrick. im set.
February 12th, 2009 at 12:50 pm
I just called. They will upgrade your phone for free if you have been with them over 18 mos, but *IMPORTANT* it comes at the cost of a new 2-year contract. I had to ask to clarify. The rep kept saying “Free with upgrade” and I said what does that mean? “Upgrade is a 2-year contract extension”.
February 12th, 2009 at 12:58 pm
im excited to get my ocean but like we all know this world isnt perfect. i called about changing the text messaging alerts to songs and its a no go…not an available option…:( but i guess im going to have to deal with it for 2 more years.. seems like a simple upgrade so I dont get why but oh well…
February 12th, 2009 at 2:01 pm
dont u have to resign the contract if u want it for free?
February 12th, 2009 at 2:58 pm
I just got off the phone with Helio and got my upgrade to the Ocean 2 for free. Just paid shipping. I’m going to post a full review of it and a side by side comparison with my ocean a fewdays after I recieve it. Maybe Tuesday at RecklessPhilosophers.com

free mobile-mobile i’ve noticed works with sprint customers as well. I look at my bill, and…its free! so, I’m not complaining and I won’t bring it up with them to ‘rectify’ that little situation.
February 12th, 2009 at 6:58 pm
@Jeff, I just called & was told that I have to finish my 2-year contract before they will upgrade me for free. I’ve been with Helio for 18 months come 2/16/09. Maybe I’ll call back….

I can get two hookers for $400.00 roses on craigslist.com, why the hell im going to spend $400.00 for a phone? Helio can suck my ****. As soon as my contract expires im going with Boost Mobile, for $50.00 bucks I get unlimited text, minutes, walkie talkie, web.
February 13th, 2009 at 9:38 am
stfu jervis.
February 13th, 2009 at 10:42 am
@Ferny
….and only 300 ft of coverage radius…..
February 13th, 2009 at 11:21 am
The Boost Mobile comments made me take a look at Boost Mobile, but their coverage is lacking. They make it hard to find the coverage map on their Web site for a reason. With Helio, I get to use Sprint’s towers and Verizon’s cell towers with one phone. That is the main reason I am sticking it out with Helio. Plus the plan packages are laid out well, but it is a little expensive. I have not had any problems with Helio after getting my phone number ported over. That took a long time and the customer service was below average until I told them what to do myself. With Virgin Mobile, the customer service seems to be people who understand you better and speak clearer.

since im typing this from my ocean 2 i will just say that it f-ing rocks! im in love with the whole flow of this device. i can thumb type pretty fast and its keeping up with me. the only thing i miss is the click of the old keys. ill get used to that tho. seriously, ill support helio by virgin for the next 2 years. no prob.
February 13th, 2009 at 8:52 pm
LAMEOZ2 and You’re lame. Why are you attacking me. You must work for helio. We all know what I said was true. It’s idiots like you who make dumb decisions. First of all you don’t wait over a to bring out this old device. 2. If you do bring this old phone out at least have more phones ready. You can put up a picture and spec even if the phone isn’t ready. COMMUNICATE with your Clients!!!!!! They need to fire these CO’s and Hire me. I will make us number one in less than 2yrs. LAME YOU ARE LAME!!

it seems as though the Korean community already has the black on black ocean available, and that the red version is limited…based on the website…
February 18th, 2009 at 2:37 pm
I’m so happy I left and went to T-Mobile. Being with Helio, I waited forever and put up with their bullshit for the Ocean 2 and all it is, is the Ocean 1, visually revamped. Nothing more. Sure, they made a couple changes with Garmin being included and nights and weekends starting earlier, but that should have been made available forever ago. G1 is the way to go and the G2 is just around the corner, as well as the Samsung Memoir. Helio can burn.
February 24th, 2009 at 9:09 am
helio can burn? jesus…
February 24th, 2009 at 10:54 am
…well, it is a flame symbol, right?
haha, but even though the phones my not be the best, their plans are pretty good. compared to sprint’s comparable $99 incl everything unltd, sprint doesn’t allow for free int’l text messeges. helio does. and mms. which i think is 15 cents out, free incoming? so if you have int’l friends, which i know we all do, or at least we should…its free to text them a quick msg, wheras with other companies, it’s not.
February 24th, 2009 at 4:37 pm
I mentioned Boost earlier in this post and some of you said that the coverage isn’t great. Well I live in L.A. and the coverage is excellent here. I looked at Boost mobiles coverage area and they cover ALL the metropolitan areas in the US. Cannot wait to switch and honestly I hope a trend starts where people wise up and stop paying so much just so they can have a “cool” phone. No more going over my minutes, no more figuring out what #$65 is going to be AFTER taxes, and best of all, no stupid early termination fees.
February 27th, 2009 at 7:46 am
Boost mobile has a the new stature i9 phone that sells for 300 bucks plus tax:( And you can’t even e-mail from it?! The plan is cool… the coverage is limited. Perfect for those with bad credit or budgeting. Helio’s prices for it’s plans and perks are the best around even if their amount of phones are limited for now… later this year expect their device department to be beefed up:)
February 27th, 2009 at 12:11 pm
metro pcs keeps on looking more attractive… helio needs to open their service to 3rd party cell phone manufactures
March 4th, 2009 at 1:17 pm
by the way, if you are a current ocean owner, helio/virgin will give you the ocean 2 for free, all you have to do is re-up your existing contract. i did it after being a 20 month ocean user.
March 11th, 2009 at 3:11 pm
The new color black Ocean 2 is now available at http://www.helio.com for United States customers.

For some reason it reminds me of Darth Vader.

All I can say to the people who are EXCITED about this, at this point in time… Have you really been living under a rock or something?
I got a brand new Sprint Touch Pro back in OCTOBER for $130, and started a contract with Sprint. Additionally, I pay less per month than I did on Helio. The TP is smaller, lighter, has a higher resolution, larger (touch) screen, better keyboard, and hell, it’s a PPC… not even a dumbphone. Costs less, more capable, better, period. On top of that, more benefits come with Sprint over Helio… Airave? Yes please! Helio never answered me no matter how many times I asked them about the Airave on Helio… never a single word back. Shame on you, Helio.
Oh well, Helio’s long since dead. The name will disappear all together very shortly, and they’ll realize their downfallwas not meeting their own mission statement – to provide phones for tech savvy people who want the cool phone. Sorry, three year old technology doesn’t fit that bill… not even in America.
