Virgin Mobile USA officially announces Ocean 2 + goodies

Posted by Justin B. on February 2nd, 2009 at 01:37 PM

After the past few posts, what news could one-up that? It may not be better than the Ocean 2 release, but it certainly was a highly requested service for Helio. Starting February 12th, along with the Ocean 2, Virgin Mobile USA will start offering for Helio members “nights & weekends starting at 7PM” instead of 9PM. In addition to that nice little two-hour expansion, they are also ditching the $5 dollar mobile-to-mobile addon feature and including it in the service outright. Great to see that they are expanding the services out further.

And for those of you wondering, they confirmed that they will be releasing this beast in black later in the year. So, don’t fret for those of you with erytophobia, a not-so-flashy version will hit the shelves eventually.

Full press release here.

Did you notice the free MS Exchange!?

  2. Kon Says:

Someone PLEASE tell me this thing will definitely work with a Virgin Mobile account!

  3. Cameronie Says:

It will not work with a virgin mobile account.
They are the same company, but the Helio side of things is the contract side. Virgin mobile is the pay as you go side.
Both sides each have their own sets of phones.

The press release says that it will go on sale for $149 on virginmobileusa.com
does that mean that those of us with 1+ or 2+ years behind us won’t get the respective phone upgrade discount?

  4. nightbandit Says:

glad i didnt wait for this one to come out

  5. JOrge Says:

  6. serialthrilladc Says:

Why would they release an outdated phone so late with so few key features? Its basically just an orange ocean. How is this supposed to compete with everything else on the market? And who the hell is gonna be in a rush to buy an orange phone? ugh…im disappointed

  7. RAD Says:

I’m SO glad I didn’t wait for the POS to come out and jumped ship a over the summer

  8. Flydingo Says:

I still love my Ocean 1 (R.I.P.), Can’t wait for the new one. Just hope Helio/Virgin will offer some sort of deal for renewing a contract!

  9. Nomi Says:

It’s a technobrick. Still waaaay too bulky, and nothing astonishing in the way of new features.

Six more months, and I’ll be jumping ship. Which is too bad, because I really like Helio’s plans. Their phone selection is just really disappointing.

  10. gggg Says:

i dont think that the second one will be that bad but if i had the first one then i would stick with that one

  11. JOrge Says:

yeah helios plans are great but they should really make 3rd party phones availible. if only they would offer a g1 style, or htc tough style phone

  12. gabe reeper Says:

dude they should have fuckin been working on a touch screen phone not a secound of the same phone

Virgin Mobile must come out with a line up of Android-based devices. Virgin = young customer base, low cost. Google = young user base; Android ideal for subsidized model, platform for future apps. It’s all going to be about the apps for these intelligent devices. I’m forgetting about Ocean 2 and waiting for a Gphone from Virgin…

Man everybody hit it on the nose. I was about to jump ship then I got the text that it was really coming tomorrow. I called helio that same day to see if I could upgrade to it. Which I can because I have more than 13 months with them. All I have to do is sign a two year agreement. no big deal I thought I am at 20 months now and whats another few since i like the company service, phone, etc.

Then I see the pics I thought WTF!! I thought they were just more rumored pics but nope its the real deal as I found out today and I am highly disappointed. I want to leave now but I really like my ocean 1 but I don’t see the point of upgrading to a SUPER red phone like this one that minus a couple cool things really is not that great. But i guess we will see.

I jumped ship and got a refurb iPhone 3g last month. I should’ve waited another month and gotten a new 3gS for $50 more… or a Palm Pre… Seriously though, no buyers remorse here.
