Review: Fin Skins
The Fin skins provided by Helio are an easy way to spice up the exterior of your Helio Fin without permanently modifying it. They offer six different kinds, produced by GelaSkins. They are made of a solid feeling vinyl sticker with photo-quality printing, and feature artwork from a handful of artists. They come in a CD sized plastic package with a cardboard insert containing directions and other information, along with another insert that has the actual skins on them. Each skin will only set you back about 12 bucks.
Unlike 90% of the adhesive-based products on the market (Yes, we’re glaring at you, cheapo screen protectors we bought on ebay), the skins are extremely easy to apply. If I can do it, you sure as hell can! Air bubbles are easily pushed out. They are also very easy to remove and re-apply in case you want to swap skins or reposition it. The skins feel like they will last for a good number of reapplications (Our guess would be around 4 or 5). In all the removals and reapplications we did for the review, there was no residue lurking behind on the Fin.
What about the print quality? The skins feature the same high quality printing used in other Gelaskin products, so they don’t disappoint. Check for yourself in the shots below.
Urban Jungle by GelaSkins
Make your Fin disappear into the snow with the camouflage skin! Basic camo print.
Great Wave by Katsushika Hokusai
The Great Wave skin is based on an awesome painting from around the mid 1800s. Looks real nice on the Fin.
Fuzin Raizin by Aya Kato
Featuring a dragon on the front, and some kind of hybrid Buddha/ninja on the back.
Ink Pond by Nanami Cowdroy
A cool montage piece, probably one of my favorite skins on the Fin.
Don’t Eat The Sand by Jeremiah Ketner
The cutesy-wewtsey skin for the Fin, with flowers and crazy alien kids.
Just Cause You… by Steven Daily
Birds + Skull + Lady = This skin. Overall, a really clean looking skin.
New Fin Skins (Added December 16th, 2007):
Swinging DAIM by Steven Daily
Part graffiti, part futuristic abstractionism. I’d love this one as a desktop image.
Robo by Nathan Ota
Robots = Awesome. Robots + space ships = Oh hells yes. We only wish it was a different image on each side.
Monstrer by PlayDead Cult
If someone had a room jam-packed with skulls and you opened the door, the resulting avalanche would look something like this. If the other skins are too bright and playful, this might fit your needs.
If you’re looking for a way to customize the awesome canvas that is your Fin without spending a ton of money or firing lasers at it, we’d definitely recommend the Fin skins.
Pros:
- High Quality Printing
- Affordable, easy way to customize your device.
- No residue left behind
Cons:
- None at the moment. We’ll update the page if we notice the skins starting to peel, or if the adhesive noticeably weakens after a few removals/reapplications. No signs of either yet.
